This is a question that has occupied the thoughts of freshmen, sophomores, and even juniors alike at the beginning of each semester. There are widely differing viewpoints on the subject of Greek society, with the popular media's generally negative portrayal as the dominant notion. With hazing, roofies, and a general “douche bag” or “slutty” stereotype of the average fraternity or sorority member, a preconceived adversity to rushing is actually quite understandable. Denying the fact that these aspects exist in the Greek system is an appeal to mental retardation; but as they say, the bad outweighs the good, and a small existence of these factors overshadows features like philanthropy, social networking, and a camaraderie that exceeds the superficial.
You may have heard on the news recently of a fraternity's infringement with Boulder police concerning felonies and investigation, but did you know about Zeta Beta Tau's $5,000 donation to Children's Miracle Network and Make A Wish Foundation, Tri Delta's $5,000 donation to the Denver Oncology Ward, or Sigma Pi's astounding $60,000 raised for Clinica Family Health Services and the Tennyson Center for Children. By becoming a part of the Greek system, you should have no reservations about giving back to the community; it is shame though, that they are depicted as such a detriment to society.
Joining a fraternity or sorority offers social and educational stability as well. New members receive a 'big brother' or 'big sister' to help guide them in a new educational atmosphere. Joining a house is like joining a family, something that really can't be described until experienced, and the pool of support one can draw from is not easily rivaled. Rushing in the Spring might be considered too late for such an endeavor, but in reality it just as opportune as rushing in the fall.
Case in point: give it a shot, it is nothing you will regret.
